Fashion: 15 Dresses for 15 Body Types

So I am really good at knowing what looks good on me, fashion wise. My mom taught me well, and I have a good eye. So my friends will sometimes ask me to go shopping with them and help them find stuff, pick out new clothes.

So I was really happy when I came across Refinery 29‘s article 15 Perfect Spring Dresses for 15 Body Types.  Because really, the 3 or 4 most commonly referenced body types in fashion magazines just don’t cut it. These 15 are more like the shapes I see of the women around me. And presenting these different body shapes in a positive light as well as giving fashion recommendations. So now I can help my friends a bit better because this slideshow totally makes sense to me, it breaks it down in a way that I can relate to.

Now if only Refinery 29 would do this for jeans… sigh.

Food: Rhubarb

Rhubarb

So my older sister has started growing rhubarb in her garden, and she was telling me, over lunch on mother’s day weekend, that she has a whole bunch ready to be cooked! So this got me thinking, what can we make with all this? And then it all came together:

One of my vegan college friends had posted this recipe for Rhubarb Salsa.

I stumbled onto a recipe for Rhubarb Pie (no strawberries) on my favorite food site, Food52.

I just discovered Smitten Kitchen (which looked like Smitten Kitten on first glance), I know, such a late discovery, but better late than never! And she has a recipe for Rhubarb Streusel Muffins. Which seem to be a coffee cake inspired muffin, yum!

I have never cooked rhubarb before, and have only eaten it a handful of times, but I love strawberry and rhubarb crumble. I can’t wait to try this new ingredient! Plus all these recipes look really delicious!

Books: Top 100 Science Fiction and Fantasy Books

NPR listeners voted for the Top 100 Science Fiction and Fantasy Books. This list is very thorough and highlights the amazing wealth of great stories in the Science Fiction and Fantasy genre. I love this, I must read the books on the list that I have not gotten to yet. Well done NPR!

Fashion: Zimmermann Swim 2012

Zimmermann Swim 2012

This bathing suit reminds me of my first bathing suit as a kid, it was floral, with a blue background and a ruffle around the bottom like a little skirt. I wore that bathing suit until it fell off my body.

This bathing suit is like the super grown up gorgeous version. Lusting after it so badly!

Feminism: It Happens All the Time (via Rookie Mag)

It Happens All the Time

“A private conversation about street harassment, made public. […]

It dawned on us that you can take any random group of girls and women, and EVERY SINGLE ONE of them will have multiple stories of terrible things that were said to them and done to them on the street by strangers, as a matter of course. Just the normal state of affairs when you are out in public, being female. Like, we’re not special. This happens to everybody.”

This is so true, and definitely reflects the stories I heard from the women with whom I took my self-defense class.
Every woman, your mom, your sister, your daughter, your niece, your aunt, your best friend, we all have stories like this.
And we think about these things every single time we walk down a street alone, especially at night.
I had some pretty horrible street harassment happen to me in France (being followed in a car, getting slapped in the face, getting grabbed, getting yelled at, etc.) and I know many women who have had similar experiences.
Street harassment is an epidemic.
You can take self defense in DC at DC Impact, which also has other chapters around the US.
Protect yourself, and lets all stand up to street harassment together.

I may need to try wearing a scarf as a sort of belted shirt, a la these two pictures (via Fifi Lapin).
